New Show...

Surprise…I was on Google and I typed in The Diamond Age and up pops a page about it being a new show on Sci-Fi…with George Clooney! It says it will be a long form series…no idea what that is. It also says it is only in the plans but still I wonder how they will do it…

They could do maybe a couple scenes a week, like how in the book there are different scenes. Or I could see them focusing just on Nell and having the other characters just be secondary ones, and we really only see the show/book through Nell’s eyes.

I think it would be interesting to see who they get to play the characters; Clooney I could see him as either Hackworth or Finkle McGraw.  He would be good playing a lord, or a well-rounded engineer, that recites poetry. I am sure whatever he plays, and if it actually makes it to TV or a movie even, my mother will be all over it, she LOVES him! As for the other characters I am not sure…especially since the characters age and the book time jumps.

Anyways I think it would be an interesting show/movie to see; just because it has so many things going on, and different points of view. I wonder how they would do the whole aspect of the primer!  Well if it happens cool if not oh well….

Thoughts?

Here are the pages I got it from

  1. That is really interesting that they are making The Diamond Age into into a show! Plus, if George Clooney is an actor in the show, I’m sure they are going to do a great job with it. I agree that it would be cool if they did the show by the different scenes in the book, and maybe combined a few of the scenes for one episode since some are fairly short.

I think I could see George being an engineer and playing Hackworth! But you are right, and I could see him also playing Finkle McGraw.

If it does make it to TV it will be really cool to see what they make out of all the technology. As we read the book we get the opportunity to create the scenes with our mind, but I wonder what they will come up with for the look of the primer? Or any other characters for that matter! That is always the fun but sometimes disappointing thing about books turning into movies or TV shows!

But, I still think this is super interesting and it has the potential to be an awesome TV show!!!

  2. To be honest, I can see this show going many different ways; mostly because of all of the characters and different plot lines that are in the book. As many of us were confused about the first few pages of the book, hopefully they could simplify it greatly for the viewers to understand. On the other hand I can definitely see the producers throwing everything at us except for the kitchen sink like Stephenson did. That wouldn’t be the first time that there was a very confusing TV show (i.e. Lost).

I think that I would like to see the show have it by following each character just like in the book. It may be a little confusing, but I think it would make the show more interesting especially since other characters than Nell do have very important plot lines. Another thing that is going to be interesting to see is how they are going to do the Primer. For some reason I see it like in Blue Clue’s where Steve jumped into the painting or even like in Wish Bone, even though the book didn’t describe the Primer like that. Another aspect is going to be interesting to see if they are going to the whole sex computer thing. I’m sure not, but the producers could always put their own spins on it and make it more TV friendly.

If it make it to TV, I’m definitely going to tune in and see how close it is going to follow the book.

  3. I think that having The Diamond Age be a TV. show would be so cool. I too would be so interested on how they would show the primer. I think that maybe they will show the primer like when Nell is reading this big old book and it sucks her in and she is in this new world that she can control. Also, I would want them to stick really close to the book, because I hate when shows/movies aren’t as good as the book. However, there are some things that they can’t show all the way, like Bekah said the drummer part. How I kind of saw it though in my head was a black light party with body paint and I guess they could just show that. Also, having George Clooney as a main character they are going to get many viewers because so many people love him. I agree with you too on the problem of the time jumps in the book they are going to have a hard time. I think that the actress, Rooney Mara, who played Lisibeth Slander in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, should be Nell’s adult character. I think she would do a fantastic job portraying a girl who did not have a great childhood and is smarter than people give her credit for. I do wonder though what actress would play Miranda. Also, how will they show all the adventures Nell goes on?

  4. I agree with the idea that this would be a good tv series. Usually things made for tv are a bit iffy to me, but this seems like a plausible idea. George Clooney.. I'm not sure if I like or dislike him being a character. It's a good idea, since he'd draw a lot of attention, but I'm just not sure I see him being great at a tv series. It'll be interesting to see who ultimately ends up playing Nell, I feel as though I want someone not in the Hollywood spotlight as much. Having a fresh face come in would be great, since there'd be little comparison between previous characters played. I agree with the above comment though that Rooney Mara would be a great choice for Nell's adult character. I can definitely see the way Nell connects to the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
